After any joint replacement procedure the primary objectives of rehab are typically to restore range of motion, stability, strength, and endurance to the new joint. Majority of surgeons will have a rehab protocol to help patients and therapists progress through the necessary stages of recovery in order to achieve optimal function within an appropriate time frame. It is important to work on the included exercises consistently and according to the specified frequency in order to achieve the best possible results.
Once patients begin PT they can expect varying treatment methods including muscle release, fascial work and joint mobilizations as well as exercises and stretches. These are meant to help achieve rehab goals while also improving the ease and effectiveness of the home program. The duration of recovery is highly dependent on the type of procedure that was performed and the individual patient’s ability to heal. However, consistency with the HEP is extremely important in order to achieve the best results.
As in life, recovery is not always perfect and some issues may present themselves. Physical therapists are trained to identify these issues and can help overcome them keeping you on the best path to a full functional recovery.
